DetailsAlthough Onizuka Katsukuni is not listed in swordsmith directories, the inscription on this blade clearly indicates that he was a swordsmith active in Mito during the late Edo period. The phrase "Hachiman-gū shinzen" (before the deity of Hachiman Shrine) likely refers to Mito Hachiman-gū. Tokugawa Nariaki, the 9th lord of the Mito domain, actively promoted weapons production and, in Ansei 4 (1857), established the Shirahatayama-shita Workshop near Mito Hachiman-gū, where he gathered swordsmiths and armorers. Nariaki himself even forged swords under the name "Rekkō."

Further research is needed to learn more about Onizuka Katsukuni, but this piece is a fine example of the robust and powerful style characteristic of Mito blades. It is a valuable example for the study of late-Edo period Mito swordsmiths.
