DetailsNankai Tarō Tomomori was a swordsmith from Kuroiwa Village, Takaoka District, Tosa Province. His real name is believed to be Morioka Zen'emon, and he originally worked as a sawsmith. In Bunka 15 (1818), he switched to sword forging and studied under Iga no Kami Kanemichi in Kyoto and Suishinshi Masahide in Edo. During the Tenpō era, he established himself independently in Edo. He accepted many apprentices and authored numerous books on swordsmanship.
This particular blade features a hamon with a notare-style pattern around the base of the blade, over which a sudareba-style hamon is applied, giving it an appearance reminiscent of the hamon style of Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi. This work is listed in the Shinshintō Taikan (Comprehensive Guide to New Swords).
