| Details | Heianjō Nagayoshi, together with Sanjō Yoshinori, was one of the leading swordsmiths of Yamashiro Province during the Muromachi period. His workmanship was remarkably diverse, encompassing works closely resembling those of Muramasa of Ise—with whom he is believed to have had close ties—as well as pieces displaying Sue-Seki characteristics and others inspired by the hitatsura style of the Hasebe school, his predecessors in Yamashiro. His surviving works include katana, tantō, and yari, and he was also highly skilled in blade carving. Although small in size, this tantō has a finely executed hoso-suguha hamon and an elegant sugata. It is further distinguished by superb horimono: a bonji on the omote and a suken on the ura. It is a fine and highly characteristic example of Nagayoshi’s workmanship. |
