DetailsRyōkai Yoshisada, a descendant of the Ryōkai school of Yamashiro Province, is said to have moved to Chikugo Province around the Ōan era (1368–1375) of the Nanbokuchō period. The swordsmiths who followed in this tradition, including Yoshizane, Hideyoshi, and Yoshitsugu, are collectively known as the Tsukushi Ryōkai school.
This group flourished in the Usa area near the border of Buzen and Bungo Provinces. Its smiths commonly used “Ryōkai” in their names in a manner similar to a house or family name, while the character “Yoshi” (能) was used as a shared generational character.
This blade displays characteristic features of Kyūshū workmanship, including a prominent itame grain and a somewhat darkish tone to the jigane. The accompanying kuro-roiro urushi-nuri saya maki-e koshirae (black polished lacquer scabbard with maki-e decoration) is considered to date from around the middle
