DetailsSadayoshi Gassan (月山貞吉)is a swordsmith descended from the lineage of Deba Gassan, who goes by the name Yohachiro and goes to Edo to become a disciple of Suishinshi Masahide(水心子正秀). After that, he lived in Settsu Province and built the foundation of Osaka Gassan. This work is a rare piece shaped like a machete, and was commissioned by a person who was probably a flower arranger at the time, as the title says, ``Baitoen ouju.''「梅藤園応需」It is extremely elaborate, with the orderer's inscription and the author's inscription engraved in a unique pattern on one side. The attached koshirae is also a Kokutan-saya-koshirae (黒檀鞘拵) that is typical of the end of the Edo period, and is very elegant.
月山貞吉は出羽月山の流れを汲む刀工で、弥八郎と称し、江戸に出て水心子正秀の門人となります。その後、摂津国に住し、大阪月山礎を築きます。本作は「梅藤園応需」とあるように当時の華道家であろう人物からの注文打で、ナタのような姿をした珍品です。片面に独特な模様の彫物の中に注文者銘と作者銘を刻むなど非常に手の込んだ造込みになっている。附帯する拵も幕末らしい黒檀拵で非常に品が良い。
