Tachi-koshirae総金具 (Sokanegu): Refers to all the metal fittings used in the sword mountings. In this case, they feature a design called "柊囲沢瀉紋散図" (Hollyhock Crest and Flowing River Pattern) without a specific maker's signature.
目貫 (Menuki): These are ornaments typically placed under the cord wrapping on the handle (tsuka) of Japanese swords. The description mentions "柊囲沢瀉紋三双図," which is a design featuring hollyhock crests and a flowing river pattern in triple pairs.
鐔.大切羽 (Tsuba ,Oseppa): This refers to the opening in the handguard (tsuba) where the blade passes through. The description mentions "柊囲沢瀉紋散図" (Hollyhock Crest and Flowing River Pattern) without a specific maker's signature.
柄 (Tsuka): The handle of the sword. It's described as having a color resembling fresh green leaves ("萌葱色") with a design of paulownia leaves ("桐紋") and gold brocade wrapping ("金襴着") using brown thread ("金茶色糸") for the cord wrapping.
DetailsThis sword is a Bicchu-ji sword from the early Muromachi period. The accompanying Tachikoshirae is Kin-Nashiji-Hiiragi-Kakoi-Omodaka-Mon-Makiesaya-Itomaki-Tachikoshirae (”金梨子地柊囲沢瀉紋蒔絵鞘糸巻太刀拵”).Makie's Kamon is also known as Ozeki -Omodaka("大関沢瀉 ”), and is the family crest established by Takamasu, the third ozeki of the Kurobane clan, who ruled the area around Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture. The Kurobane clan was a small domain with an income of about 18,000 koku, but at the end of the Edo period, Masuhiro, the 15th Ozeki, held important positions in the Shogunate, such as Naval Magistrate and Wakayori. There are very few items inherited from the Ozeki family of the Kurobane Domain, so they are extremely valuable from a historical perspective.
