Details | Ko Hoki is a general term for Yasutsuna and his clan of swordsmen including Mamori, Aritsuna, Sadatsuna, and Masakiage. Among them, Yasutsuna's sword is the most famous, being counted as one of the Five Great Swords of Japan as "Doujigiri Yasutsuna." The name "Doujigiri" comes from the legend that Minamoto no Yorimitsu, the heir to the Seiwa Genji clan, used this sword to cut off the head of Shuten-doji, a demon who lived in Oeyama, Tanba Province. In 1719 (the 4th year of the Kyoho era), the 8th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate, Tokugawa Yoshimune, ordered Hon'ami Mitsutada to create this sword, and it is also listed as "Meibutsu Doujigiri." This sword is a heavily polished sword with no signature, and is considered to be an ancient Hoki sword. The forging process has a mixture of large-scaled hardened blades, pronounced grain, and a dark hue mixed with ground patterns. The blade has pronounced blade surface, good ka-mon (blade pattern), sand-flowing pattern, and abundant gold lines, making it a masterpiece that displays the characteristics of ancient Hoki. |
