DetailsThe Fukuoka Ichimonji School traces its origins to Norimune and emerged in the early Kamakura period, reaching its greatest prosperity in the mid-Kamakura period. Among this lineage, works from the early Kamakura period are particularly referred to as Ko-Ichimonji.
At the time of its designation as an Important Sword, the signature was difficult to decipher. However, the renowned sword scholar Tanobe Michihiro later determined that it was most likely the work of Ichimonji Nobufusa.
Nobufusa was the son of Enshin. He is said to have served as one of the swordsmiths in attendance to Emperor Go-Toba, bore the title Nagahara Gon no Kami, and, together with Hisakuni, was honored with the distinction of Master Swordsmith of Japan.
This work displays the elegant tachi form with pronounced koshi-zori. The forging shows an itame-hada with vividly expressed midare-utsuri, while the hamon consists of ko-chōji mixed with gunome and ko-gunome, conveying a distinctly classical character.
