DetailsYagyū tsuba are iron sword guards closely associated with Yagyū Renya-sai Ujiyasu, who served as fencing instructor to the Tokugawa shogunate, and with the philosophy of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū. Avoiding flamboyant decoration, they are characterized by an austere yet powerful style that emphasizes the quality of iron, and are highly regarded as tsuba favored by the warrior class for embodying both practicality and spiritual depth.
This example is of sumi-kiri kaku-gata form, with a thick, laminated plate and kaku-mimi ko-niku rim. It displays excellent iron quality, and the rim shows linear iron bones (tekkotsu), all of which are典型的 features of Yagyū tsuba, lending the piece a dignified and appealing presence.
