| Details | Nobuie is counted among the Three Great Masters of the Momoyama period, together with Kaneie and Umetada Myōju. This tsuba exemplifies Nobuie’s distinctive carving technique employing omote–ura zu-gawari (different designs on the front and reverse). On the obverse, the four characters “Tadanori Jinmei” are boldly carved with a heavy chisel, while the reverse features a cloud-borne dragon rendered in fine chiseling in the manner of a textured ground (jimmon-fū). The inscription “Tadanori Jinmei” originates from a line of ancient Chinese poetry and is read together with the preceding phrase “Kō tō ketsuryoku” (Filial devotion requires the utmost effort). It conveys the moral teaching that one should devote all one’s strength to one’s parents, and serve one’s lord with one’s very life. Rooted in Confucian ideals that value benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trust, this inscription carries a clear message rejecting the mentality of gekokujō (the overthrow of superiors by inferiors) that prevailed during the turbulent Sengoku period. This piece is published in Nobuie by Mitsuru Ito, the leading authority on iron tsuba research, and bears documented provenance from the Date family. |
